About

I am an artist and photographer based in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, UK. I currently live in Barnsley and work in Leeds as a college lecturer. I currently teach Photography, Functional Skills and GCSE Maths.

My artwork is based around diabetes which is an illness i suffer from and have suffered from since i was 12 years old. The theme of work developed while i was studying my first degree in Fine Art and Computer Applications. I went through a rough period with my illness and felt as though it was speaking to me. I have worked with sugar, balance, control and fragility ever since.

The other body of work i am currently developing is a series of photographs i started back in 2006. They are photographs of benches. The benches are often in quite remote locations begging the question of anyone having ever sat on them? However, on the other hand i also like park benches and it makes me think about all the stories they have heard over the years and types of people that may have used them for all kinds of purposes.

I am currently studying a Masters Degree in Fine Art with the Open College of the Arts – this blog is my learning log and forms part of my course.

  1. Hi there–your sugar painting photos are terrific. Would you ever consider licensing or allowing them to be published in a kids book about cooking around the world?

  2. Good afternoon James!
    Big fan!
My name is also James (not also, just James or jimbo).
I searched Chinese Sugar Painting Recipe and your site revealed.
Big fan of your photography… some have the forlorn industrial feel of expired Christo monumentals.
    Bleak, you say!
Bleak aftermath, mid-math and pre-math with a glorious intent. What toll dreams exact!
Your photographs make me wonder about the visioner, the forces and balances of the efforts to create and record the objects, the human tales and affects… is the pipeline coming and going… some views sense the photographer is a security camera: unaware its view is portraiture.

I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico, near Santa Fe.
