My work is inspired by a slide of an Iris by Richard Salmon Gall. It is a moving image piece that explores the idea of the hindrance of sight and the power that the eye beholds. However the connections are greater than that and lend themselves to the power of the solar system – the retina scan itself reminiscent of the sun through its rich yellow colour, it’s form, and the texture given by the veins running through it.

I create a moving image piece that was using an artificial iris (a camera lens) to try to portray what it would be like to be hindered in site.

The result was a solarised pulse of light and movement like the birth or fall of a star.

The piece is reminiscent of the powerful videos of artists like Nam June Paik’s ‘Electronic Moon’ and videos of Bruce Nauman and Bill Viola.

This has also been made for a week or so and i feel this is also got the potential to be quite powerful but it needs some further work on it to maybe improve the presentation of it. I feel this should be large text and quite overpowering, but i am not sure this is enough and whether the presentation/imagery needs working on.

I chose comic sans font on this piece because it has a childlike association and i wanted this to be like a child’s wish list of what they want to be when they grow up.

The actual piece created is approximately 50cm x 100cm.

James Campbell, 78, originally planned to have the four-seater bench placed in his favourite bus stop in Alnmouth, Northumberland, once he had passed away.
But after talking the matter through with his partner, Sally Miller, he decided he could get some use out of it himself – not least becausehe suffers from arthritis.
He has even had it engraved with the words: “James Campbell and Sally Miller.
“James Campbell – In the departure lounge, Sally Miller – Flight delayed indefinitely.”
Mr Campbell, a retired offshore worker, said: “There was no seat at my local bus stop.

“I have arthritis and standing waiting for the bus to get into Alnwick used to hurt so much that I used to just give up and drive the car in.
“Then I thought to myself, when I die I’m going to leave a seat there. But then I thought, why wait until I have gone? I’ll get no use out of it.
“I got a somebody from Morpeth to make the bench, and then I had to have a think about what to write on it as Sally wouldn’t let me disclose her date of birth.”
The final wording was “something that just came from the top of my head”.
His reference to “the departure lounge” has struck a chord with some of his friends and neighbours.
“When I’m sitting having a coffee and a sandwich with some of the other old fellas in the village we say we’re sitting in the departure lounge.
“I have started using it already. It was just a daft idea but I have a long time to wait before I die so I thought it would be better if I got some use out of it.
“I think most people in the village were a little amazed, but a lot of them have told me what a good idea it is.”
He added: “Usually, when you see memorial seats, it says something like, ‘This was their favourite place’.
“I think it’s a bit of a shame because that person will have never actually got to sit there.”

I was sent a made up story that may have been found in a newspaper and was asked to take a photograph to represent the story as well as provide a caption for the photograph.

Below is the story sent and my response to it.

Software lets son hear father’s voice

 Estranged husbands that have been deserted by their wives and arranging cults and sects against them are trying to get hold of their children in desperate ways.  Husbands have been banned from seeing their own because the pioneers of these clubs are trying to prevent them  being a bad influence on their children.

The few men who were interviewed, one being David Smith of Northwarrick said that “I’m fine about it now because I was always seeing beautiful women around me all the time and they just give me the horn so it’s a good thing.” One of the reasons that the women have formed their own club is because they were tired of the consistent unfaithfulness of their husbands and the dishonesty. “At least we can do what they did now and to be fair, it’s a better world not to be tied down to one person, in fact it’s a thrill to chase and be chased,” says Cheerie Donahue, one of the members.

Men are now downloading a new piece of software which allows their children to converse with them in secret without their mother’s knowing. The software is female sensitive and an alarm will be activated if a scent of a woman comes close to being near the software.
